New Organic Apple Cider Vinegar Drinks Target Industry Sweet Spot

Organic apple cider vinegar has a loyal and growing following—and for good reason. Studies show that it may lower blood sugar levels, cholesterol and blood pressure and offer protective effects against cancer. Our two debut flavors for these refreshing and healthy coolers, honey and pomegranate-cranberry, offer a delicious way to down organic apple cider vinegar from the "mother," a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY) akin to that found in kombucha. The benefits of drinking vinegar include improved digestion, reduced blood pressure and an assist with weight management, points out SmartBrief.
The LiDestri’s team chose these flavors for their nutraceutical properties that to add to the already healthy profile of vinegar. Honey is credited with improving memory and pomegranate and cranberry are full of anti-oxidants.
Vinegars have long been consumed in Asia as a health tonic and they’ve been re-trending in the U.S. as "shrubs," a drink that combines fruit (or even vegetables) with vinegar and sugar. The flavored vinegar beverages date far earlier than Colonial times, when early American settlers drank it for better health, Michael Dietsch noted in his book "Shrubs, An Old Fashioned Drink for Modern Times."
We developed these new light and approachable cider vinegar drinks to help our private label and retail brand partners target two growth hot spots in the hyper-competitive beverage market: organics and nutraceuticals. We saw substantial interest in these beverages at the Private Label Manufacturers’ Association conference in November, as did the entire category. Post-PLMA, Euromonitor noted that "Drinking vinegars are now moving beyond cocktail bars and Asian restaurants into supermarkets as US consumers, especially millennials, move away from carbonated sodas into other beverages that are perceived to be healthier."
Clearly, vinegar drinks have great potential to drive growth. They are a promising part of the organic grocery boom, where we are seeing organic coffees, teas, juices and specialty beverages everywhere and witnessing a steady stream of releases. According to a recent forecast from Sandler Research, organic drinks will average more than 16 percent growth globally between 2016 and 2020.
At the same time, functional drinks, including nutraceuticals, are expected to grow at an 8 percent annual clip globally, according to market watchers Wise Guy Reports. The cider vinegar drinks join other innovative functional offerings from LiDestri, including anti-inflammatory flavored aloe waters as options for retail and private label partners who want to reach this growing consumer group.
I was actually inspired to develop this line of apple cider vinegars by my own personal epiphany. After my daughter was born, I had been trying everything I could think of to get rid of pregnancy-induced swollen ankles but nothing seemed to work. After trying numerous remedies with no luck, a friend of mine suggested drinking organic apple cider vinegar as a way to help flush my lymphatic system.
I was skeptical and, frankly, not crazy about the taste, but I started doing it anyway. I was shocked when it worked almost immediately.
