4 P’s of Innovation
We are always seeking ways to improve our offerings and create value for our partners. We focus on the 4 P’s of Innovation, which covers the four pillars of our business: Product, Processing, Packaging, and Partnerships. We look for ways to improve along the development journey – from the initial formulation to the final product in the consumer’s hand. Innovation is baked into every facet of our process.
Product innovation takes many forms. In some cases, it involves tinkering with existing formulations, improving taste and quality. We are experimenting in our test kitchen, working to make good products better and, in more challenging cases, creating brand new products to meet shifting consumer demand profiles. The conversion in recent years toward organic products and away from the use of preservatives has allowed us to test new ingredients and formulations to help match our partners’ products with a new focus. We have also created new products based on our research of emerging trends. As an example, when LiDestri founder Giovanni LiDestri had the idea to present Paul Newman with a spicy salsa, he had R&D create a sample overnight so we could present it to Paul the next day. He did. Paul loved it. And it remains one of our best-selling products.
We work to make packaging as efficient, sustainable, and cost-effective as possible. Our latest innovation is the Living Jar™, a PET plastic container that is swiftly replacing glass jars in the pasta sauce aisle. Our innovative containers are shatterproof and lightweight – cutting down transportation costs, eliminating losses from broken jars, and making online purchases (an increasingly important consumer segment) easier and safer. We have also taken innovative steps with Tetra Pak cartons, which are perfect for fresh juices and functional beverages. Consumer demand for fresh products with fewer or no added preservatives continues to grow, and our packaging solutions have reflected that growth.
At the heart of any good manufacturing plant is an evolving mindset. In fact, we have process experts dedicated to improving efficiency and consistency across all our lines. We provide our customers with state-of-the-art processing facilities that support cost-saving efficiencies in manufacturing. We have been at the forefront of innovation in natural and healthy products, a segment that has seen explosive growth and is now a major driver of consumer behavior. We are one of the few companies to combine Fresh Processing manufacturing and high pressure processing (HPP) under one roof. This innovative process extends the shelf life of products and also ensures the safety of fresh foods and beverages. Consumers want fresh – and we have pioneered the method for delivering it.
Our partners are an integral part of everything we do, and we love nothing better than working with them to improve products and processes. We share the same goals and working together to maximize our strengths and experience helps us reach them faster. Every partnership is different, and we approach each as a unique opportunity for shared innovation and collaboration. While some of our partners prefer a hands-off approach, others might come by every six weeks to brainstorm improvements and new formulation ideas. Since speed is crucial, especially with the fast-paced new consumer trends, our flexible approach allows us to move much faster than big, bureaucratic organizations.
We understand that our partners entrust us with something sacred to them: their brand. We treat it as if our company's name were on that package. That is a heavy responsibility, but we walk in lock-step with our partners and together we celebrate the wins and recognize our opportunities as a team.
